The Focus Forum: “The Evolution of Protest Movements in Modern Ukraine: Empires, Wars, Identity”

The history of Ukraine is marked by a long and complex struggle for national identity, sovereignty, independence, and democratic values. The Ukrainian lands located on the frontier between the West and Russia used to be part of the Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, and Russian empires. However, being at the crossroads of different civilizations and cultures, Ukrainians have managed to preserve their cultural identity, territory, historical memory, language, and national consciousness.

It became the fifth hub in the world created by the international non-governmental organization Cultural Emergency Response (CER). The Black Sea Regional Hub in Ukraine was co-founded by three non-governmental organizations from Kyiv, Lviv, and Odesa that work to preserve and save cultural heritage - the Agency for Cultural Resilience (ACURE), HeMo Ukrainian Heritage Monitoring Laboratory, and Museum for Change.

The exhibition "Maidan: Birth of a Dream. The First Battle" is the largest display of protesters' belongings and other exhibits from the Maidan, as well as works of artistic reflection on the events of the Revolution. The Maidan Museum displays several hundred art objects that tell the story of Maidan initiatives.

On this day, 32 years ago, students organized their first Maidan, the Revolution on Granite. Youth protested and went on a hunger strike for 15 days, from October 2nd to October 17th, 1990. This Maidan was the peak of opposition to the Soviet regime. On the granite slabs of the Kyiv center, then the Square of October Revolution, now known as the Independence Square, the students changed the country with their non-violent resistance.
